Este livro, o qual tem sido apropriadamente chamado de “Um Romance de Mistério,” foi publicado privadamente em 1895. As discussões que se seguiram levaram a edições sucessivas, a presente sendo a décima primeira. Nesta edição, os capítulos excluídos de edições anteriores foram fornecidos em um lugar, dessa maneira alargando e tornando o livro completo.
Será observado que Etidorhpa consiste não apenas em uma história dentro de uma história, mas que os capítulos na parte posterior do livro estão estritamente conectados com incidentes precedentes, desse modo trazendo para a atenção do leitor fazes de pensamento que, de outra maneira, poderiam ser desprezadas ou negligenciadas.
